In my Jan. 14 post US RETAIL SALES: AN ANALYSIS OF THE LAST 2 YEARS, I outlined the significant market share gain of “non-store” retailers. I wrote However, the “new normal” can be applied to online shopping, the only segment … Continue reading
US CHAIN STORE SALES PLUNGE
ICSC-Goldman’s chain store same-store-sales fell 2.5% last week. Even though January is a low volume month, the trend is definitely worrying. Chain store sales are barely ahead of their deeply depressed levels of last year. Even though January is a … Continue reading
STIMULUS BACKLASH IN Q2 2010?
Dennis Gartman raises an interesting point. The effective tax rate is as low as it gets and Q2 take-home-pay will likely be lower than in 2009. Normally, these things smooth themselves out over a year. But current economic conditions are … Continue reading
US CHAIN STORE SALES UP 2.0% LAST WEEK
Discretionary spending is very volatile these days, exacerbated by January being a low volume month and by weather fluctuations. The trend remains flat since September. Trailing 4-week sales are up 2.2% over the very depressed same period last year.

E-Commerce Sales Rise by 5 Percent
Following a 3% decline in 2008. comScore (NASDAQ : SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today reported retail e-commerce spending for the holiday season from November 1 through Christmas Eve. During this period, approximately $27 Billion was spent … Continue reading
CHAIN STORE SALES UP 0.4% LAST WEEK, 1.0% IN 2 WEEKS
Chain store sales bounced back 1.0% in the last 2 weeks, erasing the big early December –1.3% drop. The 4-week moving average remains low, however, as it is down 0.75% from the 4-week m.a. at the end of November. The … Continue reading
THE US CONSUMER: BUYING AND DELIVERING THE GOODS
Amid declining employment, work week and hourly earnings and faced with a record debt level, the US consumer was hard pressed to maintain the right balance between spending and saving in order to help sustain the economy while restoring its … Continue reading

Late Holiday Shopping Puts Retailers Ahead
(…) A late boost from procrastinating consumers and an extra day of shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas increased total retail sales, excluding automobiles and gas, 3.6% over the year-earlier period through Christmas Eve, according to MasterCard Inc.’s SpendingPulse unit. Still, … Continue reading
CHAIN STORE SALES UP 0.6% LAST WEEK
Not a bad number considering the heavy snow storms in the Northeast which impacted sales last Saturday, the last day of the week. The 4-week m.a. remains down.
