Not a big surprise but nevertheless disheartening sales trends for many retailers.
May yoy sales changes were generally worse than April (which had Easter this year).
Higher end retailers continue to suffer disproportionately . Department stores sales remain weak while discounters generally fare better. Note that starting in May, Wal-Mart no longer publishes monthly sales.
Noteworthy:
- ARO continues to do well
- TGT had a pretty bad May after a better April.
- COST seems to be struggling vs its peers.
- TJX is doing progressively better since February.
Weekly ICSC and Redbook sales have reached a plateau since Easter and are showing signs of further weakness:
